How this practice tracker works

A free 10,000-hour practice tracker

10khours turns your practice into a grid of 10,000 squares. Each filled square represents one hour you have recorded. Use it for piano, guitar, coding, languages, drawing, or any skill you choose. It is a manual practice log: there is no timer to start or stop.

How do I record or correct my hours?

Choose a skill, enter the hours you just practiced, and press Enter. Or click the grid, add hours with +1 or Space, and confirm. To fix a mistake, click your cumulative total and enter the correct number. Changing the skill label renames your current log; it does not create a separate log.

Is it free, and will my records survive a new device?

The tracker, Google sign-in, cloud saving, and JSON export are currently free. Without signing in, records stay in this browser and can be lost if you clear site data. Sign in with Google to save confirmed changes to your account and restore them on another device. Export records while signed in for your own backup. A connection problem is shown on the page; an unsynced change has not reached the cloud.

What happens at 10,000 hours?

A completion certificate appears with your skill and completion date. Save it as an image, or use the available sharing options. It celebrates your self-reported practice; it is not an accredited qualification.

Does the 10,000-hour rule guarantee expertise?

No. The number is a motivating milestone, not a universal threshold for mastery. Practice matters, but its quality, feedback, and other factors matter too. The Association for Psychological Science explains the research and its limits.

How long is 10,000 hours?

Continuously, 10,000 hours equals 416 days and 16 hours. At one hour of practice every day, it takes 10,000 days, or about 27.4 years; at two hours a day, about 13.7 years. These estimates use 365-day years and assume no missed days. Your next hour still counts.
